Dr. Mujica and her team at All Kids Pediatric Dentistry understand that a dentist’s office can be a frightening place for kids. There are so many sights and sounds here that are not familiar to them. That’s why we make every effort to make your children feel comfortable from the moment they walk through the door.
First, you and your child will be cheerfully greeted by our front office staff. With age-appropriate games, toys and books, the waiting area is designed to be a fun place for kids. Our aim is to create a welcoming and friendly first impression and to perhaps provide a happy distraction.
In the examination area, we follow the Tell/Show/Do protocol. First, with an age appropriate explanation, we tell your child what we are about to do. Second, we show them what we’re going to do; if we think it will be helpful, we might demonstrate the necessary treatment on a toothy stuffed animal friend. And of course, stuffed animal friends are always available to cuddle with your kids in the dentist’s chair. Finally, we do the procedure that your child needs to maintain a healthy and happy smile.
There are times when any child may be helped by sedation dentistry, such as when we are performing a procedure that requires them to remain still for a rather long time. We also understand that some children are naturally more anxiety prone than others. That’s why we offer three kinds of safe and reliable sedation dentistry:
Nitrous oxide provides the mildest sedation and is ideal for when a child has an appointment that may take longer than usual, such as a dental filling or crown. We place a “silly nose” over their own, so they can inhale a carefully measured amount of nitrous oxide and oxygen that helps them relax and be calm.
For children with more serious dental phobia or anxiety there is oral sedation. Dr. Mujica prescribes a mild sedative for you to give to your child before coming to our office. He or she will arrive feeling a little sleepy and may think they’ve dozed off during treatment. They will, however, actually be awake so we can ask questions and give them instructions.
Finally, there is hospital or in-office IV sedation, which is typically reserved for specific scenarios such as appointments that include several procedures and children with special needs or severe behavioral issues.
